Unlocking Renewable Energy at Scale for Western Australia

img

Red Gully BESS is a grid connected utility-scale battery to be developed in the Shire of Gingin in Western Australia.

The battery will facilitate renewable energy transition by storing excess, affordable electricity generated in times of strong sun or/and wind and discharging when the people of Western Australia need it most.

It will be constructed in phases, with Phase 1 to deliver 400MW of power to the grid with 2,400MWh of storage capacity, out of a total build size up to 800MW/4,800MWh.

Uniquely located next to Western Power’s Regans Terminal which is due for completion in 2027, the Project will strongly compliment the State of Western Australia’s Clean Energy Link – North transmission network upgrade program. This will be achieved by providing grid regulation capability in anticipation of a significant volume of new renewable energy generation and supporting periods of peak electricity demand.

Location

Located in the Shire of Gingin

Red Gully BESS is situated approximately 105km north of Perth CBD and 38km north-west of the town of Gingin.

The Project will connect to the South West Interconnected System via a 330kV transmission line to Regans Terminal. The development zone is approximately 1.3km away from Regans Terminal.

Benefits for the Community

SUPPORTING THE LOCAL ECONOMY

Red Gully BESS aims to bring jobs, skills, investment and economic diversification to the region. It will support local workers, suppliers and businesses while creating lasting economic benefits. Workers will be able to start or progress their careers in renewable energy construction and operations, due to the significant size of the Project.

CLEAN ENERGY & GRID RELIABILITY

The 6-hour duration battery enhances grid stability and supports more renewable energy on the network. By storing excess solar and wind energy and releasing it when demand peaks, the system helps balance supply and demand, supports the Government’s scheduled coal-fired power retirement by 2030, and delivers a more reliable, resilient grid for all Western Australians.

BUILDING COMMUNITIES

We are committed to open engagement and meaningful benefit sharing via supporting local initiatives and programs that make a real difference to our community and Traditional Owners. Through collaboration and transparency, we aim to ensure the project contributes positively to the region over the life of the Project.
